Alexandra was born at 24 weeks gestation with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and bronchomalacia, two conditions that affected her ability to breathe. Weighing only 1.6 pounds at birth, Alexandra required special care as she continued to develop and build her strength. After receiving a tracheostomy, she arrived at Franciscan Children’s for both rehabilitative services and caregiver teaching.
With help from our dedicated staff, Alexandra transitioned to being off her vent for up to 16 hours a day and is now eating four times a day by mouth. In physical therapy, she has worked on reaching for toys, rolling, tummy time and sitting unsupported. Alexandra’s parents, Melody and Stephen were by her side every step of the way learning how to care for her needs so she could safely go home.
